Conversation Starters

Conversation Starters

Even difficult conversations can be relational when approached with curiosity, compassion, and a shared goal of student success.

For Teachers to Use with Families:

  1. “Can we talk together about something that’s affecting your child’s learning?”
  2. “I want to share a concern, but also hear your perspective—what do you notice at home?”
  3. “This isn’t easy to say, but I want to be honest and supportive. Can we work through this together?”
  4. “Have you seen something similar outside of school? What do you think might help?”
  5. “What support would feel helpful to you and your child right now?”

For Families to Use with Teachers/Administrators:

  1. “I have a concern and want to understand more—can we talk through it together?”
  2. “Something has been bothering my child, and I’d really appreciate your insight.”
  3. “I’m feeling unsure about something that happened—can we clear it up together?”
  4. “How can we partner to make sure my child feels safe and supported at school?”
  5. “What steps can we take as a team to help my child move forward?”

Why This Matters

Relational interactions:

  • Foster trust and reduce assumptions
  • Create space for shared ownership of solutions
  • Empower families and educators as co-leaders
  • Help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally

Let’s move beyond “how was your day?” and start connecting in ways that change outcomes.📥 Want more tools like this? Contact info@cfsp.org or explore our [Trilogy Series] workshops to learn how to lead relational learning in your district.
